Standards We Certify

Comprehensive coverage of all major ISO standards relevant to language service providers and localization agencies.

ISO 17100:2015
Most Popular
Translation Services
The international standard for professional translation services. Covers translator qualifications, revision processes, and quality management.
Why LSPs need this: Required by 80%+ enterprise RFPs and government tenders. Proves your translators meet international competence requirements and your workflow includes mandatory revision by a second linguist.
ISO 18587:2017
Trending
MT Post-Editing
Quality management for machine translation post-editing. Essential as AI translation becomes mainstream in the language industry.
Why LSPs need this: In the ChatGPT/DeepL era, clients demand proof that your MTPE process maintains quality. Certifies your post-editor qualifications, full vs light editing workflows, and MT output quality controls.
ISO 9001:2015
Quality Management System
The world's most recognized quality management standard. Applicable to all LSP processes and widely required by enterprise clients.
Why LSPs need this: Fortune 500 companies won't work with uncertified suppliers. Covers your entire business: project management, vendor selection, client communication, and continuous improvement. Complements ISO 17100.
ISO 27001:2022
High Demand
Information Security Management
Protect clients' confidential documents with the world's leading information security standard. Required by enterprise and legal clients.
Why LSPs need this: You handle the most sensitive documents daily — patents, legal contracts, M&A documents, medical records. ISO 27001 proves you protect client data with world-class security controls. Mandatory for legal and financial clients.
ISO 21999:2020
Translation Quality Evaluation
Systematic framework for evaluating translation quality. Standardize your QA process and prove your quality commitment to clients.
Why LSPs need this: Move beyond subjective quality reviews. Provides objective error categorization, severity levels, and metrics. Shows clients you don't just translate — you systematically guarantee quality.
ISO 20771:2020
Legal Translation
Specialized requirements for legal translation services. Required by many law firms, courts, and government bodies worldwide.
Why LSPs need this: Courts and law firms increasingly require certified legal translation processes. Proves your team understands legal terminology, confidentiality, and jurisdiction-specific requirements. Justifies premium pricing.
ISO 27701:2019
Privacy Information Management
GDPR compliance framework for information security. Essential for LSPs processing EU personal data from clients and end users.
Why LSPs need this: If you process EU personal data (names, addresses, medical info in documents), GDPR compliance is mandatory. Extends ISO 27001 to cover privacy — proves you handle personal data responsibly.
ISO 13485:2016
Medical Devices Quality Management
For LSPs translating medical device documentation. Required by healthcare clients and regulatory bodies in the EU and US.
Why LSPs need this: Medical device translations (IFUs, clinical studies, labeling) are strictly regulated under EU MDR and FDA rules. Opens the premium healthcare translation market. Clients pay 2-3x standard rates.
ISO 24495-1:2023
Plain Language
Ensure your translations and communications are clear, accessible, and understandable. Growing demand from public sector clients.
Why LSPs need this: Brand new standard (2023) — early adopter advantage. EU Accessibility Act drives demand. Public sector and healthcare clients require plain language compliance. Unique differentiator in a competitive market.
ISO 22159:2021
Terminology Quality
Quality assurance for terminology work. Perfect for specialized translation companies working in technical, legal, or medical domains.
Why LSPs need this: Inconsistent terminology kills client trust. Proves your term bases are systematic, validated, and quality-controlled. Essential for technical, legal, and medical specializations. Complements ISO 17100.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before starting your certification journey.

How long does the certification process take?
The typical timeline from application to receiving your certificate is 2–4 weeks, depending on how quickly you can complete the required documentation reviews. Our documentation package significantly speeds up this process. If you opt for priority audit scheduling (Professional or Enterprise tier), timelines can be as short as 10 business days.
Is the certificate internationally recognized?
Yes. Certificates issued through TranslationCert are backed by BALTUM Certification Body, which operates under internationally recognized accreditation standards. ISO certificates are globally accepted — the same standard numbers are used and recognized worldwide, making your certification valid for clients and tender requirements across Europe, North America, and beyond.
Do I need to have documentation before starting?
No — you don't need to have any documentation in place before starting. Begin with the free self-assessment, which will identify any gaps. Once you apply, we provide a complete documentation package (policies, procedures, and forms) tailored to the standard(s) you're certifying to. You simply review, customize, and implement it in your organization.
Can I certify to multiple standards at once?
Absolutely. Our Professional tier covers 2 standards simultaneously, and the Enterprise tier supports 3 or more through an Integrated Management System (IMS) approach, which combines overlapping requirements to reduce duplication and complexity. Certifying to multiple standards at once is more cost-effective than separate audits and is the recommended approach for growing agencies.
What happens after certification?
Your certificate is valid for 3 years. Each year, a lightweight annual surveillance audit (€490) confirms your management system is still functioning effectively — this is typically a 1–2 hour remote check. At year 3, a full recertification audit is conducted. We send reminders well in advance. Professional and Enterprise clients also receive 1 year of post-certification support for questions and implementation guidance.
How does the online audit work?
The audit consists of two stages. Stage 1 is a documentation review — your auditor reviews your management system documents and provides feedback. Stage 2 is a remote assessment via video call (typically 2–3 hours), where your auditor walks through key processes with your team, reviews evidence of implementation, and asks clarifying questions. There's no need for an on-site visit — everything is conducted through our secure platform and video conferencing.
